Sheldon Solloway served 4 years in the Merchant Marines, starting as an Ordinary Seaman and finishing his service as a Second Officer. His first assignment was on the Liberty Ship “George Thatcher” built on Terminal Island, California. He was on its maiden voyage when it was sunk by a German U Boat in the South Atlantic. His service took him throughout the world without any further near-death experiences. He is now a resident of Rossmoor Walnut Creek where he continues to enjoy his first love, that of music, and he is currently in the process of writing a book about his wartime experiences.

The 73 year old uniform hat that Sheldon wore throughout his wartime service. Standing next to it is a photo of Sheldon in full uniform (including the above mentioned hat) standing on a small boat in Panama. It was moored near his Liberty Ship while his ship was in for repairs. He befriended the owners who were preparing to cross the Pacific.
