PACIFIC RIM MEMORIES

by Walter Braun, Rossmoor Walnut Creek Resident

Arlene and I have had the pleasure to travel to all the continents. We come
back weary but filled with memories of people we have met and sights that we
have seen.

In cataloging and processing my images, I get to re-live our experiences over
and over again. This set of images is an amalgam of several trips to China, New Zealand, Australia and Hawaii. Each of these countries is a gem. In China we started in Beijing to see the Great Wall and the Forbidden Palace, then on to Xi’an to see the clay soldiers. Travelling to the far west we got to experience the life of the ethnic Tibetan people, their fields, their harvests and their markets. What a contrast to the great cities of Beijing and Shanghai.

On another trip, a very long flight from San Francisco took us on a tour of the east coast of Australia from Cairn to Melbourne. We didn’t buy a boomerang or
a didgeridoo but got some fascinating photos and were entertained by a friendly group of Aussies in each of the cities that we visited. We then went on to the
south island of New Zealand where the sites are reminiscent of the Swiss Alps. We did not have a favorite place in the land of the Kiwis. Everywhere we went, Christchurch, Queenstown, Rotorua, Napier, we were welcomed as friends. The Maori culture is pervasive; street names particularly are tongue twisters.

The last few images in the grouping are from several of the Hawaiian Islands – Maui, Oahu and Kauai – all beautiful in their own way. Surely one of the most exceptional experiences is a boat ride from Lahaina in the summertime to see the humpback whales cavorting in the beautiful blue waters.

Hope the images encourage you to visit these countries so you can create your own memories.
